Cistern Cay is fully platted with roadways and an older paved 2,500-foot runway, heavily wooded, with more than six miles of open roads for biking and hiking. Mangrove estuaries along the western and southern shores are reachable by small boat, kayak or paddle board.
The island has a colourful past. A smuggling haven in the 1970s and 80s, it still holds a handful of homes left untouched since then, slowly returning to the woods.
